Interpretation of Awakening

As with all art, the symbols within this image, and the image as a whole, invite many interpretations. When my husband first saw it, he said, “You created Nox.” In Roman mythology, or Nyx in Greek, Nox is born from Chaos and is the goddess of night. While this was not my original intention, I’ve come to love that interpretation.

I believe Awakening emerged from my own internal chaos. Just as Nox is the personification of night, this image feels like the personification of my intuition, organized chaos.

The original caption for this piece read, “Let not the darkness of the past or present prevent you from moving forward. Seek wisdom, truth, and understanding, letting all else turn to misty vestiges that can no longer hold you back.” At the time, my thoughts on wisdom, truth, and understanding were not centered on the self. As time passed, and as you’ll see, this work became part of a deeply personal journey.

Now, I see the raven positioned over the eyes as a symbol of trust. It represents trusting one’s intuition to lead the way, rather than relying entirely on answers from outside oneself.
